Diabetic retinopathy: Fundamentals for primary care

چکیده
Deborah Broadbent is Director of Diabetic Eye Screening, Liverpool Diabetes Eye Centre, and Honorary Clinical Lecturer, Department of Eye and Vision Science, Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Prescot Street, Liverpool. Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of visual impairment in the Western world. Its pathophysiology involves a complex inter-related sequence of events giving rise to clinical signs that can predict the risk of visual loss. Risk factors for the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy are clear and guidelines for their management have been made. With good management of the underlying diabetes, regular screening and optimal treatment it is possible to reduce the risk of visual impairment for people with diabetes.

Accuracy of primary care clinicians in screening for diabetic retinopathy using single-image retinal photography.
PURPOSE Diabetic patients with limited access to ophthalmologists have low screening rates for diabetic retinopathy. We evaluated a diabetic retinopathy screening program in a community health center using single images taken with a nonmydriatic retinal camera and primary care clinicians trained to read retinal images.
